Refractive and Presbylaser Surgery
What are the alterations of refraction?
In a normal eye, the outside image is modified by the cornea and the lens to focus on the retina. In general, short-sighted (myopia) eyes are bigger and place the image in front of the retina whereas long-sighted (hypermetropia) eyes are smaller and place the image behind the retina. Astigmatism develops an alteration in the corneal curvature.
Refractive surgery techniques have the aim to reduce or eliminate the patients necessity to wear glasses or contact lenses. It does not act on the rest of structures of the eye, such as the retina since they can have previous problems not related to the surgery.
What is refractive surgery, LASIK or Laser in situ Keratomileusis assisted with Excimer Laser?
The surgery with Excimer laser modifies the surface of the cornea through a cut and a later reduction of the thickness of the cornea in order to correct the refractive problem: myopia, hypermetropia or astigmatism.
LASIK surgical procedure is performed with anesthesic eyedrops; then, a corneal flat consisting in a thin layer of superficial corneal tissue is created. Laser beams are applied on the corneal bed. Then the corneal flap is re-positioned.
It is performed in the operating theatre following the required hygienic measures. The patients collaboration is important.
After surgery, some discomfort such as tearing or red eyes may appear but they will resolve in few days.
Post-operative evolution normally allows patients to resume normal activities quickly. It requires the use of eyedrops and, occasionally, a general treatment.
